My professional journey of more than 30 years has varied profiles and fields covered, but writing was never a part of it. When someone says “how come”…I wonder too!!! Without specifically looking out, synopsis writing came my way. Hugely apprehensive but mostly excited, I ventured into this unexplored arena without any expectations. I reckon my biggest advantage was that I came with no preconceived ideas.
So, when the training started, the shocker was the technical aspect of synopsis writing. For starters, it seemed that there is no creativity required. It seemed all about grammar, good command over the English language, a specified number of words etc. etc. My willingness to mold myself and striving to learn has been pretty useful in creating content that has been appreciated by the client. In synopsis writing, my experience has been that the biggest winner is to keep one’s focus on the end reader. So, understanding the client requirement and being attentive to the client feedbacks has helped me to create content which, to my mind, needs to be absorbing, expressive, precise and interesting.
I have felt a sense of responsibility that comes with my role as a synopsis writer, which lies in being able to convey accurate information without compromising on “creativity”, however limited it may be. I have toiled not to sound repetitive, worked around words to enhance the expressions and capture emotions which would naturally grab the attention of the reader. Initially, I would get carried away with trying too hard and getting too involved. But, as time passed by, I figured out a decent blend of the usage of words, precision, and expression in my synopses.
However, the challenge is of not really knowing the readers’ or the viewers’ perspective. This, I guess, is an ongoing one, where I just hope for the best!!! My experience has taught me that understanding the subject thoroughly helps. So, if I am writing a synopsis for a television show, watching the show and understanding the characters and the plot becomes imperative to churn out an informative synopsis. Having said that, sometimes, I have experienced the danger of boredom and repetitiveness setting in. Sitting for long hours at one place has never been my cup of tea. And that is precisely what I do these days. With my spectacles on, I watch the videos with concentrated attention so that the details are sketched in my mind. With only the mind exercising, the body is becoming lethargic, and the needle on the weighing scale is on an upward trend.
All in all, as a synopsis writer, I have experienced and written the best ones when I have been successful in blending the subject with the objectivity of the purpose of synopsis writing.
