How many times have you tried to figure out the difference between marketing and advertising? Tricky topic, right? There is a small yet major difference between these two terms, which most of us are unable to identify.  Even if you reach out to experts in search of the exact difference, no two explanations would be alike. While the definitions may differ, both the fields serve the same end purpose, which is to attract customers towards a product or a service.

If you notice carefully, marketers and advertisers first run after people so that people are compelled to chase the product later. They induce the need for a product and convert prospective customers into qualified ones.

Marketing and advertising content writing are new ways of attracting customers towards a product or a service. For instance, building brand awareness with marketing and advertising content is one of the most effective ways of marketing these days. Most of the target audience is reachable via the internet. With the help of blogs posts, customer engagement increases. More engaging the content,  higher the trust of the customers in a brand.

Marketing: An apple pie

Marketing is an apple pie that uses advertising content writing to create a dynamic marketing campaign for your organization.

Marketing is one blanket term, which includes every aspect of convincing a customer that they need a product. Marketers are powerful convincers who will try to sell us a product, leaving us in a state of ‘I didn’t know I needed this product until I found it.

Marketing is a time-consuming process that deals with pricing, promoting, and distributing, a product so that it reaches a wide range of people. Furthermore, marketing involves techniques like market segmentation, target group identification, and market analysis to accomplish successful customer engagement and product promotion.

Content marketing is the new way of attracting customers these days. Gone are the days when marketing strategies involved face to face interaction which was perceived as forced and annoying at times. Content marketing is gaining attention as people trust editorials more than any other marketing gimmick.

Advertising: A piece of an apple pie

While marketing is an entire apple pie, advertising is a piece of that apple pie. This means advertising is a subset of marketing. Advertising is a form of communication with customers that promotes a product or a service creatively through different platforms. Today, advertisers use every possible media to ensure their messages reach the target audience. This is accomplished via television, print media, radio, internet, direct selling, hoardings, and mailers.

Advertising is the largest chunk of expense in most marketing plans. Displaying ads at every possible site, where a customer’s eyes can reach, demands a lot of money. However, online advertisements are trending these days. They are cheap and offer massive outreach.

Marketing is all about strategizing to sell a product or a service as a whole, by understanding the target audience and market needs. On the other hand, advertising is a marketing tactic which deals with conveying the promotional messages through various media. Therefore, we can summarize the difference as this – marketing generates the need for a product, advertising entices people to buy it.
